6 October 2026

Choosing the right storage unit is not always easy. Measurments can look straightfoward on a screen, but picturing how boxes, furniture and other belongings will fit into that space can be much more difficult.

Our online size guide is a useful place to start. However, because every one's belongings are different, it is also worth considering exactly what you plan to store and, where possible, viewing the avalible units in person.

What Size Storage Unit Do I Need? | Viking Self Storage

Start with a list of what you are storing

Before comparing unit sizes, make a simple list of everything you expect to place in storage.

You do not necessarily need to record every small item individually. Insstead, count the approximate number of boxes and identify the belongings that will take up the most room. These might include:

  • Sofa and armchairs
  • Beds and mattresses
  • Wardrobe and chest of draws
  • Tables and chairs
  • Large appliances (fridge, dishwasher)
  • Bicycles or sporting equipment
  • Buisness stock, tools or equipment

Pay particular attention to unusually large, heavy or awkwardly shaped items. These can affect the type of space you need more than a group or regularly shaped boxes.

It is also worth thinking ahead. Will you add more belongings later? Will yu need regular acess to anything in the unit? If so, you may need to leave enough room for a walkway rather than packing everything tightly together or up to the door of the unit.

Use our online size guide

Our online size guide helps you compare different unit sizes using familiar examples, giving you a starting point for deciding how much space you might need.

Storage unit sizes are shown in square feet, which describe the floor area. For example, a space measuring 5 feet by 10 feet has a floor area of 50 square feet. The unit’s height also matters when considering how your belongings could be arranged, Our storage units have a celing hight of around 8ft (2.4m).

Use the examples in the guide alongside your own inventory. Two households with the same number of bedrooms can have very different amounts of furniture and possessions, so a house-size comparison is a guide rather than a guarantee.

Consider what can safely be stacked and whether furniture can be dismantled. Removing the legs from a table or taking apart a bed frame may make the available space easier to use.

See the storage units in person

Sometimes, the easiest way to understand a storage unit’s size is to stand inside it.

A visit lets you compare the floor space and height of available units and picture where your larger belongings could go. It also gives you an opportunity to discuss how you’ll load the unit and access anything you need during your stay.

Bring your inventory, photographs and any measurements with you. These details can make the conversation much more useful than simply saying you need space for “a few rooms of furniture”.

Give your local store a call to arrange a visit.
